THE WOUNDS THAT REMAIN
When the Islamic Republic opened fire on protesters on January 8 and 9, 2026, they deliberately aimed birdshot at people’s faces and eyes. Thousands were permanently blinded. Hundreds of thousands carry pellets, shrapnel, and bullets in their bodies that require urgent surgery to remove.
Many of these survivors are in hiding, unable to access public hospitals for fear of arrest. Medical care must be arranged covertly, at enormous cost, through networks of doctors risking their own freedom to help.
